New Western Anti-Drone Systems Reach Ukraine’s Battlefield
Ukraine has put two new Western-made anti-drone systems into operational service within days, reinforcing the layered air-defense network that protects frontline units, logistics routes and critical infrastructure from mass Russian drone attacks. On September 2, 2026, the 1030th Anti-Aircraft Missile and Artillery Regiment “Aquila” of the 3rd Army Corps publicly revealed the British-made RapidRanger short-range air-defense system mounted on a Spanish URO VAMTAC 4×4 vehicle and armed with LMM Martlet missiles. One day later, video footage highlighted by the open-source account GAU indicated that the first Rheinmetall Skyranger 35 systems mounted on Leopard 1 tracked chassis had arrived with Ukraine’s 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment.
RapidRanger: A Mobile Missile Shield Against Shahed and Orlan Drones
Developed by Thales UK as part of its ForceSHIELD family, RapidRanger is a lightweight, highly automated mobile air-defense launcher. The launcher module weighs less than 500 kilograms and can be fitted to different wheeled or tracked platforms; Ukraine has paired it with the Spanish URO VAMTAC 4×4 tactical vehicle, creating a highly mobile short-range air-defense platform that can rapidly change firing positions. The system combines daylight and thermal-imaging cameras, automatic target tracking and 360-degree surveillance, using passive infrared search-and-track or an integrated surveillance radar depending on configuration.

The Ukrainian launchers are equipped with LMM Martlet missiles — a lightweight precision weapon weighing about 13 kilograms and measuring roughly 1.3 meters — guided by Thales’ laser beam-riding architecture. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence confirmed on April 21, 2026 that RapidRanger systems were already engaging Russian Shahed attack drones, and the system is considered effective against reconnaissance drones such as the Orlan-10. Electro-optical and passive infrared surveillance also reduce dependence on continuous radar emissions, helping crews stay concealed until an engagement becomes necessary.
Skyranger 35: Gun-Based Counter-Drone Firepower on a Leopard 1 Chassis
Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 35 gives a Cold War-era Leopard 1 tank chassis an entirely new role as a tracked short-range air-defense carrier. At its center is the 35 mm KDG 35/1000 revolver cannon, which fires at up to 1,000 rounds per minute and engages targets at an effective range of about four kilometers. Its most important feature for the Ukrainian battlefield is compatibility with programmable AHEAD ammunition, which disperses a calculated pattern of sub-projectiles near the target — a strong advantage against small UAVs, loitering munitions and other low-signature aerial threats.
The reported delivery traces back to a Rheinmetall contract announced on October 10, 2025, valued in the three-digit million-euro range and financed by an unnamed EU country through proceeds from frozen Russian assets. The 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, previously associated with Gepard and Tunguska mobile air-defense systems, is a natural home for the platform, deepening its ability to defend moving formations and sensitive positions.
Why Layering Matters on the Drone-Heavy Battlefield

Both systems address the same cost-exchange problem: Russian forces deploy reconnaissance drones, one-way attack UAVs and loitering munitions in large numbers, forcing defenders to decide whether a cheap drone justifies an expensive surface-to-air missile. Gun-based and lightweight missile systems let Ukrainian commanders defeat short-range aerial threats with cannon ammunition or low-cost interceptors while preserving scarce high-value missiles for cruise missiles, aircraft and other targets. RapidRanger fills the space between mobile fire groups and heavier SAM batteries, while Skyranger 35 can relocate with armored formations to protect artillery positions, command posts and logistics nodes where detection-to-strike times are extremely compressed.
The deployments also reflect Europe’s deepening industrial commitment: in March 2025, the United Kingdom announced a £1.6 billion program to supply more than 5,000 LMM missiles manufactured by Thales in Belfast, tripling production capacity at the facility. Together, the British-designed launcher and missile, the Spanish tactical vehicle, and the German-Italian Skyranger 35 program show how European platforms, missiles and manufacturing capacity are being integrated directly into Ukraine’s evolving counter-drone architecture.
